INTRODUCTION
Department of Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge, expertise in restoring and maintaining oral function by replacing missing teeth and other encompassing oral structures by designing and assembling life like prosthesis, thereby rehabilitating the lost function, comfort, appearance and wellbeing of the patient. Additionally replacement of lost maxillofacial structures is carried out in patients who are victims of trauma or suffer from congenital defects, which in turn helps them to refine their social and mental wellbeing. All the treatment procedures are coordinated by the team of experts, who provide personal care for all prosthetic needs.

HISTORY
Department of Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge, has been one of the premier and pioneer establishments in the country. The Department of Prosthodontics is known for grooming and nurturing many budding prosthodontists since its inauguration in August 1985. The Post-graduation course was put into motion from the year of 1991. From the academic year of 1996-97 the division began working under Rajiv Gandhi University. In the year 2006 department obtained deemed status with 6 postgraduate seats in one academic year. The Department has also initiated a certificate course in “Oral And Maxillofacial Implantology”. The department is committed towards accomplishing its milestones with exceptionally proficient and skilled faculty staff. A well-established preclinical skill Lab, Chrome-Cobalt Lab, Ceramic Lab, Gypsum and Polymer Lab and dedicated under graduate and Post graduate clinics to cater students and patient requirements. Astate of art Dental mechanic Lab to train the dental mechanic students. Apart from providing specialized patient care, equal emphasis given to innovative teaching methodologies and research.
UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM
The department offers education program in prosthetic dentistry consisting of crown, bridge and implantology to obtain knowledge,
understanding and skill in each theoretical and clinical divisions of the subject. The undergraduate training programconsists
consists of two phases which includes Pre-clinical Prosthodontics for the first and second year and Clinical Prosthodontics for
the third and fourth year of the BDS course, thereby amplifying their capacity and training them toevaluate, diagnose, and make
appropriate decisions concerning prevention, treatment and comprehensive care to the patients,Further, the internship program enhances their clinical skills by exposing to various treatment procedures and enrichment programs conducted on routine basis.
POSTGRADUATE PROGRAM
Three year post graduate course is guided by skilled and experienced faculty which comprises of seminars, journal clubs, case discussions and, majorandminor research work. The prosthodontic rehabilitation and specialized forms of treatment modalities are disbursed on a routine basis. The course renders standard andspecialized, both and state of the art treatment modalities like fabrication of complete dentures, partial dentures, Implant restorations, rehabilitation of missing maxillofacial part structures, full mouth rehabilitations, management of temporo-mandibular disorders smile designing and precision attachment retained prosthesis. The department encourages students to showcaset their research and innovations at national and international platforms.Cosmetic rehabilitations are carried out in conjunction with latest digital innovations like CAD/CAM, 3D printing and Lasers
PhD PROGRAM
With the rich infrastructure and excellent research opportunities, the PhD program is being nurtured by faculty who have a vast experience in clinical research and academics. The department has 4 recognized PhD guides to supervise full time and part time research scholars.
DENTAL MECHANICS COURSES
A certified course affiliated to DCI / Karnataka Paramedical Board, Bangalore, a two year course that moulds budding technicians and also helps them to acquire the required finesse and skills under the able faculty and senior technicians which further helps them to improve their advanced technical requirements.
CERTIFICATE COURSE
A well-equipped implant clinic with the state of the art armamentarium caters to the treatment of single missing tooth to complex full mouth Implant rehabilitations. A certified interdisciplinary Implant training program is being conducted for the benefit of the Post graduates andin house surgeons which allows them to place implants under the able guidance of efficient and trained implantologists.
ENRICHMENT PROGRAM FOR INTERNS AND REGISTERED DENTAL PRACTITIONERS
As esthetic practice is of vital importance in the current scenario, the department of Prosthodontics offers awell structured and hands-on certified course on “Smile Designing,” enriching the understanding and personal development of house surgeons and registered dental practitioners which and prepares them to deliver the same and keep up with the current practice.

Our department aims at excelling in the field of research mainly focusing on herbal dentistry and research in implantology. Department has multiple International and National Publications and 4 patents to its credit.

Laboratoriesand clinics
Undergraduate lab
The undergraduate laboratory helps students acquaint with clinical situations in the long run. Equipped with phantom heads, it acts as a training platform before their exposure to clinics. Students receive the undivided attention of trained faculty members who observe and inculcate the proper strategies in them, to follow and deliver.
Undergraduate Clinic
The undergraduate clinic is spacious, well ventilated with adequate dental units for students to perform clinical procedures, It offers them a chance to practice various treatment modalities using an array of advanced dental materials and equipments and are monitored by experienced faculty.
Postgraduate lab
A well ventilated, spacious clinical laboratory helps post graduates to carry out their routine laboratory procedures. Each postgraduate student is provided with their designated working space and lockers. The laboratory is equipped with the latest equipment and instruments to render advanced treatment modalities and patient care.
Postgraduate Clinic
The postgraduate clinic is equipped with latest dental units which motivate the post graduate students to efficiently and comfortably carry out all treatment procedures. A state of art implant clinic helps the students to perform various implant clinical procedures. All the treatment procedures carried out by the students are continuously monitored and guided by skilled faculty.
Ceramic and casting laboratories
A well-equipped chrome-cobalt, ceramic and polymer laboratories to facilitate fabrication of conventional and advanced dental prosthesis.

Our department is well equipped with recent advancements benefitting the students to master in those and the patients to get the best treatment and care.
T-SCAN TECHNOLOGY
We are proud that our department is equipped with T-SCAN Technology. This cutting tool is revolutionizing our approach to dental care ,empowering our faculty and postgraduate students to deliver more effective treatments and outstanding results. With T-Scan’s advanced occlusal analysis we can now achieve a better balance in our patient’s occlusion ,reducing the need for repeat visits and providing a higher level of proactive patient care.
INTRA ORAL SCANNERS
We proudly own an intra oral scanner capturing intra oral images helping us in diagnostics as well as in developing a treatment plan thereby providing a perfect blend of time efficiency and better communication with the patients.

By having a 3-D Printer we provide significant benefits to our patients by offering customised and affordable solutions for their dental problems and provide the best and more specialized treatment for complex cases.

1. An informative webinar session was conducted by the Department of Prosthodontics and crown & bridge, with Department of mechanical engineering, KLE Dr M S Sheshgiri Collegeof engineering, and technology, Belagavi in association with Shree Rapid Technologies on the topic ‘RECENT TRENDS USING ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING FOR DENTAL INDUSTRY’. The eminent speaker, Mr V. Iraimudi, B.E. MS (by research) Head – Healthcare for Shree Rapid technologies explained the process and newer technologies in the field of 3D printing and its dental applications in detail, with active participation from the participants.
2. A guiding department-level webinar session, titled “A TALK ON GOAL SETTING – YOU2.0.” Was conducted by the Department of Prosthodontics and crown & bridge. The speaker Dr Adarsh Varma R, Assistant Professor Department of Prosthodontics and crown & bridge, Anoor Dental College, Muvattupuzha, Kerala being a certified life style coach, conduct lifestyle course for students and has delivered lectures on various platforms. The speaker motivated the post-graduates of the department with successful life stories and famous quotes and emphasized the importance of goal setting in day to day clinical activities.
Events Organised
Dental camp was held at Government school Bambarga
A successful Dental camp was held at Government school Bambarga to celebrate sadbhavana diwas by Department of prosthodontics, KLE VKIDS on 14th September 2023. Team of staff and students collectively donated water filter for safe drinking water and pouches to students. Dr Anandkumar Patil Head of department addressed the students and gave oral hygiene instructions.
Plaster to Master
Plaster blocks made by the 1st year BDS students as a part of their Pre-clinical exercise go wasted after submission. Department of Prosthodontics, KAHER’S KLE VK Institute of Dental Sciences has come up with an initiative of utilizing these plaster blocks by painting alphabets and numbers, which are donated to the Anganwadis as teaching aids.
Danta Bhagya Saptaha was organized by KAHER KLE VK Institute of dental sciences in association with District Health and Family Welfare Department, District administration and Zilla Panchayat. Dr.Deepa Magadum and Dr.Chandra Naik, Senior Dental Health Officers, Dr.Alka Kale, Principal, Dr.Anjana Bagewadi, Vice Principal, Dr.Sonal Joshi, Dean, Dr.Anandkumar G Patil, HOD Prosthodontics inaugurated the programme on 11th July 2022.
The department of Prosthodontics and crown and bridge in association with Department of Orthodontics organized a Journal Club for Postgraduates students on 29-08-2022.

Virtual Master Class for Postgraduate students, “AVALOKANA 2022” was cordially conducted by the Department of Prosthodontics in association with IPS Karnataka Branch on 7th and 8th April 2022.The inaugural ceremony was held on 7th April 2022, attended by Principal, Vice Principal, Heads of the Department, IPS Karnataka branch office bearers, President IPS Karnataka Dr.Ravi Desai, IPS Karnataka Secretary Dr.Sunil Dhaded, IPS Karnataka President Elect Dr.Prakash Nidwani, IPS Karnataka treasurer Dr.Konark Patil, the organizing Chairman Professor & HOD Dr.Anandkumar Patil, Organizing co-chairman Dr.Raghunath Patil, organizing team members and registered delegates. A total of 142 delegates had registered for the Master Class and actively participated in the event conducted on the ‘go to meeting’ app platform. A total of 14 resource persons delivered lectures on different important topics in Prosthodontics from exam point of view and the event a was great success.
Outreach Programs
Various outreach activities like camps and services are conducted by the department throughout the year to help and encourage the members of the community in which UGs and PGs take a lead in participation which in turn amplifies their confidence, leadership, empathy towards the community and helps in their overall personality development. These outreach programmes help us serve the needy and the community at a larger scale.
Worlds Prosthodontist Day
World Prosthodontist Day 2023
January 23rd, 2023 was observed and celebrated as World Prosthodontist Day by the Department of Prosthodontics, Crown and Bridge and Implantology, KAHER KLE VK Institute of dental sciences, with great pride and spirit. The program was inaugurated by Chief guest, Dr.Alka Kale, Principal of KLE VK Institute of dental sciences, and other invited guests, Vice principal Dr.Anjana Bagewadi and Dean Dr.Sonal Joshi. On account of Prosthodontist day, various competitions and activities were organized by the department of Prosthodontics for the undergraduates, interns and postgraduates students.
Basic Implant workshop for Postgraduates students, geriatric care camp at old age homes in belgaum city, Free Denture week Camp, Short film / Educational video making competition for all Undergraduate and Postgraduate students and plaster to master activity for interns were organized on account of Prosthodontist day. Social awareness on prosthodontic treatment for completely edentulous video was displayed by Postgraduates students. The department faculty and Postgraduate students were appreciated and felicitated for their Awards and Achievements on this occasion.

Free single day Denture Camp, Short film/ Educational video competition for all students Collage competition for all students including Interns Single Day Complete denture fabrication for Postgraduate students, Wax pattern making competition for Dental Mechanics students, Best out of waste Competition for Non-Teaching Faculty were organized on account of Prosthodontist day. The department faculty were appreciated and felicitated for their Awards and Achievements on this occasion.
World Prosthodontist Day is celebrated on January 22nd every year with great zeal by arranging a free denture week to benefit those in need. It is a proud achievement indeed, restoring smiles by delivering an average of 80 to 100 dentures successfully every year. Apart from free denture week many other co-curricular activities are being conducted for Undergraduate and Postgraduate students.

The Karnataka State Government Danta Bhagya Yojana Scheme, commenced in 2015, has benefitted more than 1000 patients below poverty line till date.
