Department of Orthodontics & Dento facial Orthopedics

The department of orthodontics is concerned with treatment of abnormalities of the jaw and teeth by means of various removable and fixed appliances. The treatment modalities offered include preadjusted edgewise appliance, lingual braces, ceramic braces and myofunctional appliances. Undergraduates and postgraduates benefit from a wide ranging educational pattern that includes workshops and seminars involving the use of computers for information retrieval, publishing, research methods and oral presentations.

In collaboration with department of plastic surgery, KLE Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital & Medical Research Center, Belgaum, the department provides treatment to patients affected with cleft lip and cleft palate anomalies. A feather in the cap is the Dolphin imaging software which is used for patient records, diagnosis and treatment planning. Research areas of the department include implants, distraction osteogenesis and finite element model. Last but not the least all this is backed by a dedicated teaching faculty that has won laurels for their academic brilliance.


It was started in 1987 and initially was combined with department of Pedodontics. The faculty then consisted of the highly reputed Professors in the form of Dr S.B Shetye and Dr V.P. Jayade.  Dr Sumanth Goel was instrumental in establishing a separate and independent Orthodontic Department.

The Orthodontic clinic for PG studies was established in Sept 1991 with Dr. S. B. Shetye as the Professor and Head. Later Dr. K M Keluskar & Dr Vijay R Naik took over the department. Senior professors like Dr A B Modi, Dr M R Joshi & Dr Pradip Shetye have contributed immensely.   Presently, Dr. K M Keluskar Heads the Department. It has a wonderful mix of highly qualified senior and experienced Professors along with enthusiastic and dynamic young teaching staff complementing each other and contributing significantly toward Orthodontic training for UG and PG students coming from across the Country.

Currently the department is fully computerized with latest software’s, which are used for patient records, diagnosis and treatment planning. The department of orthodontics is serving as the best department in the institution to the complete make up of an undergraduate and post graduate students by its efficient faculty members and is offering its effective service to the community.


1. The program outlined, addresses both the knowledge needed in Orthodontics and allied medical specialties in its scope. A minimum of three years of formal training through a graded system of education as specifies, will equip the trainee with skill and knowledge at its completion to be able to practice basic orthodontics and have the ability to intelligently pursue further apprenticeship towards advanced orthodontics.

2. Develop an attitude to adopt ethical principles in all aspects of orthodontic practice.
3. Professional honesty and integrity are to be fostered.
4. Treatment care is to be delivered irrespective of the social Status, cast, creed or colleagues.
5. Willingness to share the knowledge and clinical experience with professional colleagues.
6. Willingness to adopt, after a critical assessment, new methods and techniques of orthodontic management developed from time to time based on scientific research, which are in the best interest of the patient.
7. Respect patient’s rights and privileges, including patient’s right to information and right to seek a second opinion.
8. Develop attitude to seek opinion from allied medical and dental specialists as and when required.
